About

With a warm, inclusive, and exhaustive communication style, Makenzie Wesner, NP, brings over 15 years of experience to her role as a Licensed Nurse Practitioner specializing in behavioral medicine. Her unique approach integrates neurodevelopmental, behavioral, and mental health care under one roof, offering a novel family-and-community-wide perspective on mental wellness.

Makenzie's journey to behavioral medicine is as diverse as her expertise. Transitioning from a special needs teacher to a licensed developmental-behavioral therapist, and finally to a Behavioral Nurse Practitioner, she has cultivated a rich background that informs her holistic approach to care. This multifaceted experience allows her to offer comprehensive services for individuals aged 2 to 30+ years old, with a strong emphasis on family and community collaboration.

As the founder of Behavioral Medicine at Family Therapy Center, Makenzie specializes in mild to severe neurodevelopmental disorders, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD), and sensory processing challenges. Her background in neurogenetics, complex trauma, teaching, and therapy also equips her to serve those affected by other developmental, genetic, medically complex, anxiety, depressive, mood regulation, and trauma-related disorders.

Makenzie's assessment process is thorough and insightful. She performs neurodevelopmental, behavioral, and mental health assessments that include a comprehensive review of an individual's strengths, challenges, and history. Her approach integrates subtle observations into discussions, culminating in a summarization of strengths and challenges, diagnostic impressions, and recommended treatment plans. Ongoing care may include developmental/behavioral monitoring, medication treatment management, and collaborative environmental advocacy when appropriate.

Outside the office, Makenzie's passions reflect her dynamic approach to life and work. An avid open-water swimmer who has shared the waves with marine life, she brings the same sense of adventure and curiosity to her professional practice. Her love for neuroscience, genetics, and evolutionary biology, coupled with her artistic pursuits in painting, glass blowing, and music-making, inform her creative and comprehensive approach to behavioral medicine.

Makenzie Wesner's practice is rooted in the belief that young people benefit from support in better understanding themselves, as do their families and communities. By offering a blend of individual therapy for children and teens, parent support therapy, and comprehensive assessments, she strives to empower her patients to focus on living their best lives. Her commitment to innovation in developmental medicine and her enduring passion for helping others make her a unique and valuable resource in the field of behavioral health care.
