About
Driven by a deep fascination with the unconscious mind and a passion for helping others, Patrick Cleveland has dedicated over two decades to unraveling the complexities of human psychology. As the founder and clinical director of Daybreak Counseling Center, Patrick brings a unique blend of academic rigor and practical experience to his therapeutic approach.
Patrick's journey into psychology began during his undergraduate years at California State University, Fullerton, where he pursued dual degrees in psychology and philosophy. It was here that he first encountered psychoanalysis and became captivated by Freud's groundbreaking discovery of the unconscious mind. This early fascination has continued to fuel Patrick's work and research to this day, shaping his approach to therapy and personal growth.
After completing his undergraduate studies, Patrick's path led him through diverse experiences in community mental health, working with at-risk youth and individuals struggling with substance abuse. Inspired by the transformative power of therapy he witnessed firsthand, Patrick pursued advanced education, earning a master's degree in Integral Counseling Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. This program's unique approach, integrating Eastern spirituality with Western psychology, has profoundly influenced Patrick's holistic view of healing and growth.
Patrick's thirst for knowledge didn't stop there. He went on to achieve a second master's degree in Philosophy as A Way of Life from the University of Liverpool, further enriching his therapeutic toolkit with existential themes and philosophical inquiry. This background allows him to engage clients in meaningful discussions about life's most challenging questions, spirituality, and existential concerns.
In his practice, Patrick primarily works with high-functioning adults and professionals, addressing areas such as personal development, stress, anxiety, depression, life transitions, and relationship issues. He employs an eclectic approach, drawing from various schools of thought including psychodynamic therapy, internal family systems, and humanistic-existential psychotherapy. Patrick's specialization in Lacanian psychoanalytic therapy, honed through years of continued education and training in Quebec, Canada, sets him apart in his ability to delve deep into the interplay of desire, language, and unconscious motivation.
As an adjunct professor of psychology at Long Beach City College, Patrick continues to expand his knowledge and share his insights with the next generation of mental health professionals. His commitment to ongoing personal development ensures that he remains at the forefront of his field, constantly striving to be the best therapist and human being he can be.
Patrick Cleveland's approach to therapy is not just about treating symptoms; it's about facilitating profound personal growth and self-discovery. Through his unique combination of academic knowledge, practical experience, and genuine compassion, Patrick offers clients a transformative therapeutic experience that goes beyond traditional counseling.
