About

Transforming lives through perspective shifts and acceptance-based strategies, Mia Martinson, MEd, LPC, NCC, LISW-CP, is a dedicated mental health professional who helps clients improve their relationships with themselves and the world around them. With a focus on clients over the age of 15, Mia specializes in treating anxiety disorders such as OCD and agoraphobia, depressive disorders, and eating disorders.

Mia's therapeutic approach is grounded in the belief that each person approaches life with a unique arsenal of beliefs, skills, perspectives, fears, and motivations, all influenced by experiences, upbringing, biology, and other factors. Her goal is to help clients navigate life in a way that creates a grounded balance and room for growth. She employs a variety of evidence-based practices, including Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills, tailoring her approach to each client's specific treatment goals.

A strong advocate for the power of the therapeutic relationship, Mia believes that while evidence-based practices are crucial for successful outcomes, the connection between therapist and client is equally important. She views her clients as the experts on their own lives, positioning herself as a supportive guide who provides new tools, challenges, and unwavering support.

Mia's expertise in ERP is particularly noteworthy. She uses this technique as the primary therapeutic tool to help clients improve symptoms associated with OCD, eating disorders, phobias, and other anxiety-related disorders. Her approach requires a strong commitment from clients to practice skills outside of therapy sessions, emphasizing the importance of active participation in the healing process.

Her journey to becoming a specialist in OCD treatment began during her practicum at the University of Mississippi's Clinic for Outreach and Personal Enrichment while earning her Master's in Counselor Education. Mia further honed her skills at the Eating Recovery Center in Greenville, South Carolina, where she received specific training in Exposure and Response Prevention for Eating Disorders in 2019. In 2022, she completed the Exposure and Ritual Prevention for OCD Workshop at the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Treatment and Study of Anxiety (CTSA), further solidifying her expertise in this area.

Mia understands that seeking therapy is a significant step towards improving one's wellbeing. She acknowledges the challenges of finding the right therapist, budgeting for treatment, and making a commitment to change. However, she firmly believes in the hope that therapy offers and invites potential clients to reach out if they are ready to begin their journey towards improved mental health and wellbeing.
