Marie Mercado

With over two decades of experience in diverse mental health settings, Dr. Marie Mercado brings a wealth of knowledge and an integrative approach to her practice at Brooklyn Integrative Psychological Services. As a licensed clinical psychologist and NYC native, Dr. Mercado has honed her skills in outpatient clinics, inpatient psychiatric hospitals, community mental health facilities, college counseling centers, and non-profit agencies.

Dr. Mercado's therapeutic approach is as diverse as her experience. She employs an integrative model that combines traditional psychodynamic and psychoanalytic techniques with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), schema therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and interpersonal/relational therapies. This allows her to tailor her approach to each client's unique needs. Her advanced training includes Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT) with Dr. Sue Johnson, Horneyian Therapy, Schema Therapy, Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction, Trauma Art Narrative Therapy (TANT), and Brief Solution-Focused Therapy. Recently, she has added Ericksonian Hypnosis to her repertoire, finding it an effective tool for accessing the unconscious mind.

Throughout her career, Dr. Mercado has demonstrated a commitment to serving diverse populations. She has completed specialized training for LGBTQIA individuals, those with serious mental illness, and student populations. Her experience extends to providing services for individuals with developmental disabilities, offering in-home crisis intervention, and working with couples and families. Dr. Mercado's expertise also includes running groups, workshops, and parent-training sessions across all NYC boroughs.

As a lifelong learner, Dr. Mercado continually seeks to bridge evidence-based therapies with emerging "new-wave" approaches. She is particularly interested in the intersection of western neuropsychology and eastern philosophies, often incorporating these teachings into her sessions. This eclectic approach reflects her belief that therapy should be adaptable and multifaceted to address the complex nature of human experiences.

Dr. Mercado's dedication to the field extends beyond her direct client work. She actively contributes to the development of future mental health professionals by supervising LMSWs/MHCs and Ph.D./Psy.D. candidates on their path to clinical licensure and private practice. Her commitment to education is reflected in her own academic journey, having completed her undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate training at top APA-accredited institutions in New York City, a place she describes as integral to her identity and practice.
