About
Creating a safe, judgment-free space where clients can process emotions and difficult life experiences is at the heart of Katie Collins-Gillikin's therapeutic approach. As a Resident in Counseling, Katie brings a unique blend of authenticity and acceptance to her practice, fostering an environment where growth and healing can flourish.
Katie's journey in mental health counseling began at The College of William and Mary, where she earned her Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. This solid educational foundation, combined with her experience in outpatient eating disorder recovery and local private practice, has equipped her with a diverse set of skills to address a wide range of client needs.
Specializing in depression, anxiety, relationship issues, grief/loss, life transitions, self-esteem, body image issues, and eating disorders, Katie employs a variety of evidence-based strategies. She draws from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to tailor her approach to each client's unique circumstances. Her therapy style promotes curiosity and self-compassion, often incorporating laughter as a healing tool when appropriate.
Katie's personal background adds depth to her professional expertise. Growing up in a Navy family, she has lived experience with depression, eating disorders, divorce, and blended families. This firsthand understanding allows her to connect with clients on a deeper level, offering empathy and insight into these challenging life experiences. Her academic pursuits also include a B.A. in English from the College of William & Mary and an M.S.Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania, further broadening her perspective and communication skills.
Working with both adolescents (ages 12+) and adults in individual and group therapy settings, Katie is committed to helping her clients reflect on core beliefs and behavior patterns, build on existing strengths and resources, and learn healthy coping strategies. Her goal is to empower individuals to navigate life's challenges with resilience and self-awareness, ultimately leading to personal growth and improved mental well-being.
